UEFA EURO 2012: Ten places still remain

by Adrian Murray on Friday, October 7th, 2011

A lot of teams are still in play to fill the six remaining automatic places for the UEFA EURO 2012, and another eight play-off places for the right to qualify alongside Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany.

The nine pool winners, plus the runners-up with the best record against the sides placed first, third, fourth and fifth in their pool qualify directly, with the other second-placed teams entering the play-offs.

Group A
Germany is the first team to qualify on 2 September. 0-0 draw against Turkey ended Austria`s hope. Turkey welcome Germany on 7 October, Belgium play Kazakhstan. Four days later Belgium visit Germany, while Turkey play at home against Azerbaijan.

Group B
On 7 October, Russia go o Slovakia and Ireland will play in Andorra, Armenia will play at home against Republic of Macedonia. Russia will meet Andorra on the final day,  FYROM play against Slovakia.

Group C
Italy’s 1-0 win against Slovenia left the Azzurri uncatchable. Serbia are a point clear of Estonia. If Serbia beat Italy on 7 October, second place is confirmed. If Italy triumph and Estonia do not win, Slovenia need to beat Serbia on 11 October.

Group D
After 0-0 draw in Bucharest, France are one point ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Romanians are four points behind Bosnia and Herzegovina. Romania have little chance of second place. Bosnia and Herzegovina play at home against Luxembourg, France play with Albania.

Group E
The Netherlands are qualified to EURO 2012 after winning all eight games. Whatever happens in the final set of matches, the Netherlands would finish as best runners-up at worst. Sweden will meet the Netherlands on 11 October. Hungary have only a home game with Finland. Sweden will secure a top-two finish with a Helsinki win.

Group F
Croatia will qualify with a 7 October win in Greece. The final day matches: Croatia vs. Latvia and Georgia vs. Greece. Whatever happens, Croatia and Greece are the top two.

Group G
England trip to Montenegro on 7 October, when a draw will qualify the English team. If Montenegro win, they would finish first by beating Switzerland four days later.

Group H
On 7 October Portugal welcome Iceland and Denmark visit Cyprus. However, the decider match looks to be Denmark vs. Portugal.

Group I
Spain have secured first place with six perfect wins. For second position in group, the Czech Republic are two points in front of Scotland. Scotland  need to beat in Liechtenstein and Spain, while the Czech Republic lost at home to Spain or in Lithuania.
